Mindfulness Training Gains Momentum

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is awareness and it’s cultivated by paying attention.

Ask yourself, “What is my work in the world?”

Mindfulness is about relationships – first with the body.. . yours. Then with the mind and heart. Self trust develops from mindfulness practice as you begin to know yourself as embodied awareness without judgment. Deeper intuition and wisdom is the reward. Repeating negative life patterns stop. Fewer costly mistakes occur and more happiness, success, and joy appear to naturally pervade your daily life.

Whenever you notice that some form of negativity has arisen within you, look on it not as a failure, but as a helpful signal that is telling you:

“Wake up. Get out of your mind. Be present.”

Some of our better thinkers are causing large groups of people to awaken. People are realizing they have the power to calm and heal their own mind, even though they cannot control everything happening in their lives. Gatherings, conferences and seminars are occurring around the world training people to improve their life and heal their illness with mindfulness training.

Taking up the practice of mindfulness one learns skills for healing from illness either mental or physical; one gains insight, calm, focus, resilience and hope and it all counters stress. One can train their mind to promote healing, achieve business success, and enjoy lovely relationships.

10 Reasons to Take Mindfulness Training Seriously

  1. Help you eat better and lose weight (*see Resources at the end of the article)
  2. Help you stop binge eating
  3. Improve your awareness of the physical effects of stress
  4. Changes neuronal connections in regions of the brain
  5. Changes grey matter density in regions of the brain
  6. Practice improves mood
  7. Training can also make you smarter
  8. Training can help you manage pain
  9. Practice might help you live longer
  10. Practice can reduce useless or harmful repetitive mental activity

How we use our minds and awareness (not one and the same) can have profound effects on our health and happiness.

Mindfulness helps us to live better no matter what cards life has dealt us. The deeper you go into the training the more peace you find in each day and it seems to be accumulative.

At the beginning of training noticing little things around you in your life can make your day. Slowly, you begin to take charge of your moments and soon your day and the issues in front of you that need your attention. Patience, compassion, and kindness grows for Self and others. Feeling less like a victim, finding new strength, seeing wins and experiencing better outcomes. All of this leads to actually living life with purpose and becoming acutely aware of new opportunities. In short, finding happiness, maybe following your bliss.

The root cause of suffering is due to not knowing how to deal with emotions.

I was introduced to mindfulness through my meditation practice. It’s a natural next step. I cultivated mindfulness as a life skill.

Mindfulness practice comes from the Buddhist tradition, however, anyone, practicing any religion can take it up and it will only enhance your religious practice – you will become mindful of your religion and possibly achieve a deeper understanding of it than before mindfulness practice.

Pain clinics, modern psychologists, corporate workplaces, universities, think tanks, have taken up using and training mindfulness skills and techniques. Science has proven the benefits of mindfulness training.

My Experience With Mindfulness

I have experienced the healing power of mindfulness. While out for a walk with shoes not intended to walk in, I injured my foot very seriously. So serious that a conventional person would have taken themselves to the emergency room immediately. Fortunately, I haven’t been ‘conventional’ for a long time. Instead of calling for help, I called a taxi to take me home. I put my mindfulness training DVD into the player. Within 2 hours I walked upstairs with my black and blue foot. I could not put weight on it much less walk on it two hours before. I should explain here, I always take advantage of an opportunity to self-heal. My interest in attending to an issue immediately, on-the-spot with what I have at-hand has entertained me for the past few years. I have derived great pleasure from this incident since it happened. It was a breakthrough of sorts as I demonstrated to myself what I can do.

Mindfulness for me is a lifelong pursuit. It isn’t something you can learn in a day, but you can make noticeable changes in your life in a short time – 6 weeks will show you a shift and new perceptions.

Love After Love by Derek Wolcott,
Nobel Prize in Literature 1992

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another; who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
